Psychology students to benefit from e-ngaging new digital book deal

First-year psychology students at Plymouth University are taking advantage of an innovative digital book deal, believed to be the first of its kind in the higher education sector.

Undergraduates enrolled in Plymouth’s portfolio of psychology courses can download over £500 worth of key course texts free of charge to their computers, laptops, iPads and iPhones.

The deal with Cengage Learning, a leading global provider of innovative teaching, learning and research solutions, covers 12 core books for the next four years and could pave the way for a more interactive form of learning. The technology enables academics and students to annotate all of the texts and share their notes and views online with members of their course.

Associate Professor Phil Gee, from the School of Psychology, said: “This is a very exciting pilot project and one we hope will have a major pedagogical impact.

“Not only does it provide unprecedented 24/7 access to a set of the very best text books in psychology, but it could serve to make lectures more interactive, expanding the potential dialogue between academic and student outside the lecture theatre or tutorial.”

More than 360 first year students have been provided with a code that enables them to download the texts, covering module topics such as social psychology; developmental psychology; research methods and statistics; positive psychology; and clinical psychology.

Providing access to the e-versions of their texts will save the students more than £500 on the list price, and enable them to bring all of their books into lectures in something as portable as an iPhone. The digital book initiative is powered by Ingram Content Group’s Vital Source, the most-used and preferred e-textbook distribution platform in the industry.
